Busy as bees at Sxsw 2010

We’re having an awesome time at SXSW. The sun is shining and we’re dead tired from playing, partying and sleeping to little.

Last night we did our first official showcase at St Davids Hustoric Sanctuary, right before Suzanne Vega. It was a really cool venue but what’s up with all the church gigs on this tour? Is someone trying to tell me I should start playing Christian music? 😉

Sofia Talvik @ SxSW 2010 St David's Historic Sanctuary

I actually got to hang out a little with Suzanne Vega and her band after her great gig, and managed to get a pic too.

Sofia Talvik and Suzanne Vega

Joakim did his yearly SXSW dance at the artist lounge after dark and everyone was happy. (video)

Today we’re really tired after getting up early to do a showcase at noon. It might not sound early but with the traffic which is just crazy we had to get going at 9 from the hotel this morning. The gig was great though. It was hosted by Mike Galaxy at Guero’s Taco Bar, outside in the sun. Next to the venue there was a really cool store with cowboy boots. I especially loved the “Gringo” ones but I’m a poor musician and can’t afford $500 boots:-(

Right now we’re curled up in the artist lounge at ACC waiting for our next gig on Little fields roof top at 6th and Brazos where we’re playing at 7.30.

The band is chillin

Don’t forget to check my gig schedule here if you want to catch some more of my showcases here at SXSW.

Summer is here!! And so is my new summer single “Strawberries on my tongue”. This first week all of you who have twitter gets the new single for free before everyone else, with just one tweet. The single is mixed by renowned producer Magnus Frykberg and the B-side (YES! You get two versions of this baby) is a live recording with a guest performance from world musician Steafan Hannigan who has worked with Björk and Depeche Mode to mention a few.

Florida Music Festival
On saturday the 16th you’ll be able to see me live, and hear the summer single live as well at Florida Music Festival! I’m playing at “The Social” (downtown Orlando) 9pm. Be sure to come by and have a listen!

Rave review from Ninthspace

I just got this lovely review from Ninthspace! Thank you so much! 🙂

“I guess, by the time a musician gets to their third album they know whether it’s going to work out for them. Not writing, recording and touring as a hobby, but embracing their talents and working with something that’s turned out to be innate to their existence. There are perhaps a handful of musicians that I could categorise in such a way.

With the release of Jonestown, Sofia Talvik easily gets over the idea of the difficult third album (younger sibling of the difficult second album) and turns out a collection that eclipses her first two. Opening track and lead single As Summers Pass recalls the past with its acoustic progressions, but the subsequent song My James Dean is astonishing.

Because it’s not what you’re expecting. Sure it has these synth pads that appear to hang over from its predecessor, but the guitar loops lower, more geared towards grooving. The best way I can describe it is the merging of the droning synth-rock of Stereolab and the sub-Spektor inclinations of El Perro del Mar with piano too.

Over the top of this comes Sofia’s outstanding vocals and a plaintiff declaration that I’m not that special. But she is.

last tracks recorded!

I'm counting days til the 8th of november. That's when the album should, and hopefully will be, mixed and finished.

Today we added the last instrumental parts, a wonderful arrangement for three saxophones written by Hanna for the song "will you call me when you're sober". Now hold it, I know what you're thinking; "hmmm…saxophones, you mean like early Sting or perhaps that funky sound of Tina Turner?" But I promise you, it's nothing like that at all. Actually the saxophone parts on this album has sort of become my favourite sound. You rarely hear it in popmusic today, at least not like this.

Hanna (who plays the soprano saxophone) brought her friend Nis (who plays the baryton) and I barely had time to say "saxophone" before they were finished with the recordings and out the studio door. I'm so lucky to have such talanted musicians playing on this album, but then again, they're so lucky to have such a great producer (me!) hehe. Just kidding, but it's coming out just wonderful som I'm very happy with it.

Now, it may have been a quick recording this afternoon, but you will have all the time in the world to enjoy it as I'm posting a sample for you to listen at.

And that's all for today folks!
