Drivin’ & Dreaming Episode #9

ep9

This is the Ohio episode of Drivin’ & Dreaming. We check out the Zombies in Canton and visit some folk radio shows (read more and listen to them here). The RV breaks down again and my fans come to the rescue! A big big thank you to all who chipped in and helped us get back on the road!

I’ve released 9 episodes so far and the next one will be the last of the show. Stay tuned for the season finale!

Drivin’ & Dreaming Episode #8

The 8th episode of my little TV show is now released. In this episode we do a show in Mechanicsburg, PA and our micro wave oven gets fried. We celebrate 4th of July white trash style in Pittsburg and play at an old mausoleum work shop with the great artists Emily Arin and Heward Howkins.

Remember to share the episodes with your friends to keep them coming. It’s tons of work making every episode and I’m doing it all by myself on top of bookings, promotion, playing live and trying to keep things in shape on the tour. A few extra views will keep making me motivated to put in the extra work! :)

With love from Illinois

Sofia Talvik in the River Cities Reader

I had a great time in Illinois and did a lot of radio and interviews. Here’s a few of them.

This Thursday I was invited to play at the Swedish American Museum in Chicago. What a great night it turned out to be. I’ve played at the museum once before, when I was on my Lollapalooza tour in 2008 so it was a real treat to be invited back. There were over 120 people in the audience and we had a very nice VIP reception before the show.

Many thanks to Karin Moen Abercrombie and the other board members of the Swedish American Museum for a wonderful night, and to Konstnärsnämnden for supporting as well.

Here’s some pictures from the show. You can see the full album here!

Tune into Chicago radio show “Noteworthy” on UIC radio (The official Illinois University radio) tomorrow Monday July 23rd at 5:30pm. I’ll be chatting about the tour and might even play at tune or two. You can listen through their website.

After the show, make sure you get on the bus to the Elbo Room where I’ll be performing at 10pm. Chicago based cellist Ian Maksin will be doing a set at 9pm so don’t miss that! We’ll also play a few tunes together! I can’t wait!
It’s not that I’m a fan of most Swedish artists because they take on American genres I find favor with, but more so how they approach them. I feel that sometimes for such a decidedly American creation as folk and its long association as being music for the thinking man, there is more pressure as an American to create something that lives up to the sound of its predecessors and that sentiment can be all too obvious to the listener at times. That feeling doesn’t come across when listening to Sofia Talvik’s latest album, The Owls Are Not What They Seem. There is an effortless emphasis on melody that is influenced by the past, but never indebted to it. On “Everybody’s Favorite Concubine,” Talvik delicately glides along in a sparse setting that throws a few nods to the 60s and is relaxed in the way in it conveys emotion. Once the background vocals softly come in, everything’s extra creamy.
