Unmistakably Nordic in flavor, Sofia Talvik somehow still conforms to American interpretations of her own original music, a North Sea siren blending sparkle and melancholy, creating a special niche of folk music.
Seems like my gigs at White Horse, Black Mountain (Black Mountain, NC) and The Acoustic Coffee House in Johnson City, TN is going to be quite the happening. At least if you read the local press. Asheville’s Citizen Timesnamed me “Hot Pick” for Friday April 20th and Timesnews.net and A! Magazine for the arts wrote about my gigs in Johnson City, TN for Saturday April 21st!
I missed out on my gig at the Super Happy Funland SXSW after party in Houston this week as my tour bus broke down in Austin, but Space City Rock blog did a really great write up for the gig. I hope people found out in time that I couldn’t make it. I’m playing March 25th at Dun Bros Coffee in Katy, TX instead if you want to come and see my show.
Last week I attended the Folk Alliance International Conference in Memphis, TN.
I spent a few hectic days attending seminars, networking and playing showcases. It was a lot of fun and we met a bunch of great people there that I hope to reconnect with further down the road. It was interesting to be totally surrounded by folkies for a while. I’ve always counted myself into the genre but haven’t quite been part of the scene if you know what I mean. Folk – being such a small genre in Sweden, I’ve always been a part of the pop scene anyway and that’s what I know so it was cool to see how the folk sceene thrives in the US.
Jonas took a bunch of pictures from the conference and you can see a selection here! Feel free to tag yourself if you find yourself in any of the pictures.
I’ve been down with the flu for a week now, there were a lot of bugs circulating in the AC system at the hotel those days and I’ve heard a lot of attendees got sick. I’m glad to be (almost) well again though as I have some great gigs in Texas ahead of me.
Here’s the ones ahead:
Wednesday, 03/07 Lindale, TX Art of Coffee
Thursday, 03/08 Texarkana, AR Hopkins Icehouse
Friday, 03/09 Dallas, TX Opening Bell Coffee
Saturday, 03/10 San Antonio, TX G.I.G On The Strip
It’s been almost three months and it’s about time I post the before and after pics of the RV. It might show that I’ve got a history being Art Director for an Interior Magazine… haha.
As you know we bought this old beauty in FL in November to become our home for the next two years. Naturally we weren’t keen on keeping the turqouise carpet. And when pulling off the old pinkish wallpaper a whole bunch of waterleaks apperad as well. But most of it has been taken care of now. We spent two weeks rippng everything out and putting in new floors, wallpaper, tile, the lot. And here’s how it looks now. For info about each and every photo click “show info” on top right side of the page. And if you don’t want see this as a photo slide you can click here to view the images in your own pace.
Here’s a little map that shows our current gig schedule in the US for the Drivin’ & Dreaming tour. We’re booking as we go along and our plan is to hit most states in the US. Hawaii and Alaska my be a challenge for the RV though. See my full gig schedule here! I will keep adding to it every week! (And if you feel like booking me to your venue, please click here!)
Speaking of the RV we just had some major rain falls in Atlanta, GA and discovered that the overhang still wasn’t properly sealed. So now we’ll have to tape it together some more. I bought a dryer duct at Walmart that we taped to the heater in the driver’s compartment and put up there to dry it out while we were driving to Auburn today like the white trash McGyvers we are. Hopefully it won’t rain more but you never know.
At least Auburn, AL is warmer than NC. We even had the windows open today wohoo!
I’m psyched to be going to New Orleans for a couple of gigs. I’ve been watching the Treme TV show, and it seems like a cool town, that is unless you get robbed, shot and raped. Let’s hope none of those things happen to us. So far everyone have been really nice and taken care of us. Would be totally awesome to find a private spot to park in NOLA.
Well, that’s all for now! I’ll see you on the road!
