Last week to order the BOOK & LIVE ALBUM!

Dear Friends!

I’m nearing the end of my book. In fact, I’ve already written everything that is going to be in there ( … I think … I keep remembering new funny stories all the time). Now I’ll have to do the less fun work of proof reading and editing, but I’m very lucky to have my friend Jenny help me with the proof reading.

I’m also in the process of deciding which songs will be on the live album. It’s going to be amazing. The sound is so great, just like you were there in the room.

 • IMPORTANT: The Book can only be pre-ordered and will NOT be available after July. It’s a limited edition print so it will only be printed in as many copies as ordered. So be sure to order your copy today.
It’s been quite the learning process to write a book, even though there are many pictures I’m now on page 293. I started out just writing the stories and then it was like I found my voice and I had to go back and rewrite most of the stories in the first part of the book.

Sometimes I’ve been banging my head against the wall, especially when I have a great story and no great picture. In those cases I just decided to let the story speak for itself, even though pictures speak a thousand words. I’m so happy that I will get my printer sent down from Sweden this week so that I can print the pages. I feel like you never see the stuff you did wrong until you see it on a printed page, it’s just so easy to miss stuff on a computer screen.

A huge thank you to all of you that have contributed to this project!

Please spread the word and let your friends know that they can get the acoustic download “There’s A Man In A Smiling Bag” for just $5 up till August 1st. Oh by the way, if any of you missed it, the book is a pre-order only. That means that you won’t be able to buy it after the Kickstarter project closes on August 1st, so if you want a copy you should get it now.

xoxo

Sofia Talvik’s Xmas Calendar 2012 #22

Sofia Talvik singing River
Sofia Talvik singing River

I’ve never been much of a cover singer, but if you followed me for a while you know I sometimes try. So now that it’s coming on Christmas so to say 😉 I thought I’d post this live recording of me singing Joni Mitchell’s song “River”. Next year I will release a live album, so this is like a little taste of what’s to come. Enjoy!

Tune into Chicago radio show “Noteworthy” on UIC radio (The official Illinois University radio) tomorrow Monday July 23rd at 5:30pm. I’ll be chatting about the tour and might even play at tune or two. You can listen through their website.

After the show, make sure you get on the bus to the Elbo Room where I’ll be performing at 10pm. Chicago based cellist Ian Maksin will be doing a set at 9pm so don’t miss that! We’ll also play a few tunes together! I can’t wait!
It’s not that I’m a fan of most Swedish artists because they take on American genres I find favor with, but more so how they approach them. I feel that sometimes for such a decidedly American creation as folk and its long association as being music for the thinking man, there is more pressure as an American to create something that lives up to the sound of its predecessors and that sentiment can be all too obvious to the listener at times. That feeling doesn’t come across when listening to Sofia Talvik’s latest album, The Owls Are Not What They Seem. There is an effortless emphasis on melody that is influenced by the past, but never indebted to it. On “Everybody’s Favorite Concubine,” Talvik delicately glides along in a sparse setting that throws a few nods to the 60s and is relaxed in the way in it conveys emotion. Once the background vocals softly come in, everything’s extra creamy.
Daytrotter session coming up!

Daytrotter
Daytrotter
Daytrotter

I’m really excited to announce that I will be doing a Daytrotter session in early August. Daytrotter is one of today’s most interesting music formats, inviting artists to play their songs acoustically in their studio in Rock Island, IL making them available to listen to for anyone in the world. Or as Daytrotter themselves describe it:

These fine people – as they’re traveling through America’s heartland – take two hours out of their travels between shows to stop in for a Daytrotter Session at The Horseshack in downtown Rock Island, Ill. The name of the city is not ironic. They use borrowed instruments, play with their touring mates, utilize an often unkempt toilet, eat some food and then cram back into their vans for the last half of the drive. What they leave behind is a pile of ashes, sometimes a forgotten stocking hat and four absolutely collectible songs that often impart on whomever listens to them the true intensity that these musicians put into their art, sometimes with more clarity than they do when they have months to tinker with overdubs and experiments. These songs are them as they are on that particular day, on that particular tour – dirty and alive. We want you to make this your new home as it is ours. We promise that you will love it here.

Stay tuned for updates on when YOU can listen to my Daytrotter session.
