Sofia Talvik’s Xmas Calendar 2012 #9 Christmas remix by Kent’s Sami Sirviö

It’s no secret I think remixes is a really cool thing. It’s just so different from my own acoustic style and it’s always so interesting to hear how other people interpret my music. So this year I asked Sami Sirviö, guitarrist in Swedish rock band Kent to make a remix of my new Christmas single and he said yes. If you’re Swedish you probably don’t need me to introduce Sami to you, since Kent is one of Sweden’s biggest rock bands, but for the rest of you Sami is probably the next Nobel Prize winner (at least after this remix right? I hear it can cure cancer too!).

Kent have been Sweden’s darlings since 1995 when they released their first album, and I was of course a big fan like everyone else. Sami was one of the founding members and has also produced other artists as well as doing a few remixes here and there.

Daytrotter session coming up!

I’m really excited to announce that I will be doing a Daytrotter session in early August. Daytrotter is one of today’s most interesting music formats, inviting artists to play their songs acoustically in their studio in Rock Island, IL making them available to listen to for anyone in the world. Or as Daytrotter themselves describe it:

These fine people – as they’re traveling through America’s heartland – take two hours out of their travels between shows to stop in for a Daytrotter Session at The Horseshack in downtown Rock Island, Ill. The name of the city is not ironic. They use borrowed instruments, play with their touring mates, utilize an often unkempt toilet, eat some food and then cram back into their vans for the last half of the drive. What they leave behind is a pile of ashes, sometimes a forgotten stocking hat and four absolutely collectible songs that often impart on whomever listens to them the true intensity that these musicians put into their art, sometimes with more clarity than they do when they have months to tinker with overdubs and experiments. These songs are them as they are on that particular day, on that particular tour – dirty and alive. We want you to make this your new home as it is ours. We promise that you will love it here.

In 2008 I became the first female Swedish artist to play at the Lollapalooza festival. It was also my first US tour and now, four years later I’ve done a lot of tours and am on my biggest one ever. Since December I’ve done over 100 gigs in the US and I’m working my way towards Chicago again. So when an opportunity arrose to enter a competition for a slot at this year’s Lollapalooza I felt I had to enter. But in order to make them understand that they should book me I need YOUR help. I’m tracking my footprints, or rather tire tracks, back towards the east coast and will be re-visiting a few of my favorite concert venues and exploring a couple of new ones along the way. So it’s extra nice when Connect Savannah gives me this “welcome back” in their latest edition:

Folking in Memphis

Last week I attended the Folk Alliance International Conference in Memphis, TN.

I spent a few hectic days attending seminars, networking and playing showcases. It was a lot of fun and we met a bunch of great people there that I hope to reconnect with further down the road. It was interesting to be totally surrounded by folkies for a while. I’ve always counted myself into the genre but haven’t quite been part of the scene if you know what I mean. Folk – being such a small genre in Sweden, I’ve always been a part of the pop scene anyway and that’s what I know so it was cool to see how the folk sceene thrives in the US.

I’ve been down with the flu for a week now, there were a lot of bugs circulating in the AC system at the hotel those days and I’ve heard a lot of attendees got sick. I’m glad to be (almost) well again though as I have some great gigs in Texas ahead of me.
