Unmistakably Nordic in flavor, Sofia Talvik somehow still conforms to American interpretations of her own original music, a North Sea siren blending sparkle and melancholy, creating a special niche of folk music.
I’m trying to catch up on some blogging on my little CMJ/Release tour here in the US. Let’s start with some pics!
Adam Heldring and me at the Swedish Consulate Party at CMJ. We just got appointed Prom King and Queen of the Swedish DIY artists! And we are I guess. Adam’s great!
Jonas, me and Marcus at Times Square after our CMJ gigs!
Marcus (after a lot of sake), me and Jonas on our way back to the hotel in NYC. Unfortunately my US label couldn’t afford a real cab… 😉
Playing in Danbury. Not the best conditions to get people out of their houses as you can see. The place was basically flooded, but we kicked ass as usual and my Danbury Fan Chris attended the show!
In the end of October 2009 I’m releasing my third album “Jonestown” in the USA and later on in Japan. To give you a preview of the songs from the album I have gathered 12 of my favorite Swedish artists who will each perform one song from the album live with me on tape. Every week a new video is released, with a new song and a new guest artist.
Way back in the 90’s I read a book called “Bensin”. The author was a girl my age, Karin Ström, and she wrote about her life in London, as an aspiring artist. Now, years later, Karin has not only released a critically acclaimed album, she’s got another one on the way.’
Karin Ström was born in Kristianstad, a small town in the south of Sweden. She always wanted to be a singer. At the age of 13 she started writing her first songs. 20 years old she moved to London, where she got signed to the Canadian record label Nettwerk which led her to relocate to Los Angeles. Here, she released a self titled five track EP (US, Canada, UK and Sweden) with lyrics in English.
Back in Stockholm she wrote, produced and recorded the EP “Sneda Ögons EP” in the autumn of 2005, and released it on her own label Datadamen Records. Datadamen (originally Karin’s DJ name) means Computer Lady, and this marked a change of Karin’s sound from organic and guitarbased to electronic and computerized. She also switched languages and now sings in Swedish. The 24th of January 2007 Karin released her first full length album “En saga om en sten”.
If you’ve signed up as a fan on reverbnation or ticked the box “join the street team” when you signed up on my newsletter, you already know what I’m talking about. Being part of my street team is about spreading the word about my music.
I have a lot of great stuff coming up for Xmas and it’s time for me to gather the street team and make something real out of it. But I can’t do it alone. I need YOUR help! So that’s why I’m looking for a few dedicated officers to take charge of the street team, make their own groups and be a bigger part of all the fun stuff we have planned. Together we can build an army!
So how do you know you’re officer material? Well, first of all you love the music. You can’t wait to tell your new friends about it. You’ve joined basically every competition there has been on sofiatalvik.com and of course you have all the album. In other words, music is you passion and this music in particular! Is this you? Send an email to and write a few words to describe why you think you should become a street team officer.
Our CMJ tour has spread itself all the way to Washington, DC. We’re doing an exclusive gig at House of Sweden on the 26th of October. Make sure you RSVP to the gig if you want to come!
The Jonestown Report is a site sponsored by the Department of religious studies at the San Diego University. Their goal is to document all sorts of stuff about People’s Temple and the Jonestown tragedy in 1978.
As my album is named after this event, The Jonestown Report made an interview with me about my decision to call my album “Jonestown”, and my thoughts about what happened there.
